Beat the Heat: Top 5 Hair Tips for Summer
Hello there! As the Creative Director for DM, but most importantly, a person who has worn extensions for the last 15 years, I wanted to share some pro advice everyone could benefit from. Summer is the season of sun, fun, and looking fabulous. However, the heat, humidity, and extra outdoor activities can pose challenges for hair extensions. With the right care, you can keep your extensions looking vibrant and healthy all season long. Proper maintenance not only preserves the beauty of your extensions but also ensures they last longer. Follow these essential tips to protect your hair from the summer elements and enjoy your stunning look without any worries.
- Moisturize and Condition
Just like your natural hair, extensions need moisture to stay healthy. A shampoo and conditioner specially formulated for extensions is a must! If not, you can dry out your hair or cause buildup and cause slippage. A moisture deep conditioner to keep your extensions soft and shiny is recommended weekly. Consider using a leave-in conditioner for added moisture throughout the day.
- Secure Your Hair at Night
Prevent tangles and breakage by securing your hair at night. Use a silk or satin scarf or bonnet to wrap your hair. You can also braid your hair or put it in a loose ponytail to minimize friction while you sleep. Most people don’t realize that leaving your hair (extensions or not) loose and sleeping on it causes your hair to become severely dry and even breakage.
- Avoid Sunscreen in Your Hair
While protecting your skin from the sun is crucial, be cautious with sunscreen in your hair. Many sunscreens contain ingredients like Avobenzone (Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane) and Octocrylene. These compounds absorb UVA rays but can also react with your hair extensions, turning them pink or orange. To avoid this, apply sunscreen to your skin carefully, keeping it away from your hair.
- Protect from Chlorine and Saltwater
Chlorine and saltwater can be harsh on hair extensions, especially blonde shades! Before swimming, wet your hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner or a protective oil. This creates a barrier, reducing the absorption of chlorine and salt. After swimming, rinse your hair thoroughly and follow up with a moisturizing conditioner.
- Use Heat Protection
If you're using heat styling tools, always apply a heat protectant spray to your hair. High temperatures can damage both your natural hair and extensions. Keep the heat settings on your styling tools to a minimum to avoid unnecessary stress on your extensions.
- Regular Maintenance
As always, regular maintenance is key to keeping your extensions in top condition. Brush your hair gently with a wide-tooth comb or a brush designed for extensions. Schedule regular appointments with your stylist to check for any adjustments or touch-ups needed.
By following these tips, you can enjoy the summer sun while keeping your hair extensions looking beautiful and healthy. Remember, proper care will extend the life of your extensions and ensure you look your best all season long.
